Other Stories of Compassion and Courage

Lancelot (Paris, France)

Lancelot is the first dog in France to have been diagnosed with syringomyelia. Two years later, in March 2002, the terrible cervical pain came back. I took him to the clinic for some neurological tests and left him overnight so he could have a myelography. The next day the vet called me and said, “Please come and take back your dog.” I realised that something terrible had happened.

The syringomyelia (diagnosed two years before and neglected) had developed in his neck. Because of the very reserved prognosis, the poor reaction to corticotherapy and Lancelot’s pain, we decided to put an end to his suffering. He was 6 years 5 months old. Lancelot licked our hands in a last farewell and passed away peacefully, his head in my hands, leaving me powerless and desolated. A page in our life had turned.
